A DELIGHTFUL little tale from Ken Smith’s Diary in The Herald…
Reports Smith: “Our admiration for newspaper street vendors grows with the story in the just published book Century Bhoys, a history of Celtic FC’s greatest goalscorers, about early Celtic player Sandy McMahon, who scored 177 times in the 1890s.
“Authors Paul Cuddihy and David Friel relate that when the former president of France, Patrice de Mac-Mahon, Duc de Magenta, died in 1893, enterprising newspaper sellers in Glasgow tried to boost sales by shouting: ‘McMahon deid! McMahon deid!’”
