THE launch edition – yesterday – of The Scottish Sun on Sunday is understood to have sold an estimated 320,000-plus copies.
An announcement to that effect was made by the paper’s editor, Andy Harries, this afternoon to staff, adding to news earlier today that, across the UK, the paper is said to have sold an estimated three million copies.
It’s not yet known what, if any, impact the new paper has had on its rival titles which have, at least for several of them, enjoyed substantial sales hikes since the closure of The Sun’s Sunday sister, the News of the World, in July, amid allegations of phone-hacking.
As reported on Friday on allmediascotland, rival publishers, Trinity Mirror, were planning to drop the price of its Sunday Mail, Sunday Mirror and The People titles to 50p in the Grampian and Tayside regions yesterday, where the News of the World had, it is believed, a strong presence.
The Sunday Mail – Scotland’s biggest-selling newspaper – last month averaged a 357,724 sale in Scotland, according to the latest audited figures.
