Six Free Weeklies to be Shut by S&UN

Six free weekly newspapers in Scotland are to be 'suspended' by their publishers, Scottish & Universal Newspaper – a division of Daily Record owners, Trinity Mirror.

Reports journalism.co.uk, a 'challenging economic environment' is said to be behind the decision to close the Lanarkshire World, Perth Shopper, Stirling Shopper, Renfrewshire World, Clyde Weekly News and Dumfries & Galloway Today.

Bill Steven, managing director of Scottish & Universal Newspapers, is quoted as saying: “We've taken this decision to suspend these titles as a result of the challenging economic environment and we will review the feasibility of re-introducing them should trading conditions improve in the future.”

It is believed no editorial posts are at risk of redundancy but that three clerical and two distribution staff at risk of losing their jobs. The company is understood to be seeking applications for voluntary redundancy.
