THE deputy editor of The Scottish Farmer magazine has been awarded what is considered to be the ‘highest honour and most prestigious award made by the British Guild of Agricultural Journalists’.
Ken Fletcher has been named the latest recipient of the Netherthorpe Award, for outstanding service to agricultural journalism.
In a media release issued by the weekly magazine’s publishers, the Herald & Times Group, Jane Craigie, chair of the Guild, is quoted, as saying: “Ken is an ambassador for farming and for communicating about the industry and its people. His nominators said of him that his energy and enthusiasm, coupled with a passion for the job, have made him many friends from all walks of life in the industry.”
And Fletcher is also quoted, saying: “I am deeply humbled and honoured to have received the Netherthorpe Award. I always thought it was for people older and wiser than me … but then I found out that there are fewer that are now older, though many remain wiser. On behalf of myself and my colleagues – who are very much part of the reasons why I could even be considered for this award – I say a huge ‘thanks’ to those who nominated me and for those who adjudged that I deserved it.”
Fletcher has enjoyed a 36-year career at The Scottish Farmer. The magazine’s publisher, Darren Bruce, said: “Ken is a truly worthy winner of such a prestigious accolade and award. Throughout the last four decades, Ken has worked tirelessly showing tremendous journalistic talent, flexibility and leadership and I am delighted at his recognition by the Guild of Agricultural Journalists.”
The Scottish Farmer was founded in 1893. It is edited by Ken’s brother, Alasdair Fletcher.
