A PHOTOGRAPHER on the Evening Times and Herald newspapers and a Glasgow-based freelancer have been nominated in one of the UK’s most prestigious photography competitions.
The Evening Times/Herald’s Nick Ponty and Ian MacNicol have been shortlisted in this year’s UK Picture Editors’ Guild awards.
MacNicol’s nomination is in the Sports Photographer category, while Ponty’s is in the Regional Photographer one.
Of the five images submitted by Ponty one was of a visit to Glasgow by the Queen and another was of football manager, Ally McCoist, leaping into the arms of a colleague. Another was of a tower block being demolished.
Ponty is quoted in The Herald as saying: “I wanted a varied selection that would show Glasgow at its best. I like the colours of the Queen, it looks bright and vibrant, while the tower block destruction was an iconic moment.”
MacNicol was highly commended in the Sports category of last year’s event.
The winners will be announced on the eighth of next month.
Say the organisers as to why the guild was set up: “The founding members, Paddy Hicks of the Press Association, Stuart Boyd of The Scotsman and Peter Woodman of the Newcastle Chronicle, felt there was a need for people in the same profession to have a forum in which they could share their thoughts.”
