WITH the exception of the i newspaper, it was once again a case of across-the-board year-on-year falls for newspaper sales figures in Scotland.
Says the Audit Bureau of Circulation, the average sales in Scotland for daily and Sunday newspapers was uniformly down between September last year and last month, very often by double-digit percentages.
Elsewhere, The Scottish Sun on Sunday has no year-on-year figure, having been launched less than 12 months ago. Its September average was 209,579.
Meanwhile, there are no longer monthly ABCs for either The Herald or the Sunday Herald following a decision in August for the papers to be part of the twice-yearly regional newspapers sales survey.
In summary, the daily newspapers figures – issued at midday – concern sales in Scotland between September 2011 and last month and reveal the following:
Daily Mirror – 8.9 per cent drop = from 23,694 on average in September 2011, to 21,586 last month;
Daily Record – 8.8 per drop = from 270,032 on average in September 2011, to 246,324 last month;
Daily Star of Scotland – 13.4 per cent drop = 64,690 to 56,029;
The Scottish Sun – 8.5 cent drop = 314,086 to 289,451;
Scottish Daily Express – 11 per cent drop = 64,250 to 57,177;
Scottish Daily Mail – 5.4 per cent drop = 108,297 to 102,464;
Daily Telegraph – 5.6 per cent drop = 20,935 to 19,768;
Financial Times – 22.8 per cent drop = 3,680 to 2,842;
The Guardian – 12.2 per cent drop = 13,333 to 11,701;
i – 38.9 per cent up = 12,641 to 17,560;
Independent – 50.3 per cent drop = 7,532 to 3,743;
The Scotsman – 13.7 per cent drop = 38,924 to 33,585; and
The Times – 6.3 per cent drop = 20,356 to 19,074.
Meanwhile, the Sunday titles’ sales figures in Scotland were as follows:
Daily Star of Scotland – Sunday – 41.4 per cent down = 58,609 to 34,371;
Sunday Mail – 23.7 per cent down = 369,053 to 281,549;
Sunday Mirror – 47.6 per cent down = 43,947 to 23,012;
The People – 56.6 per cent down = 26,821 to 11,618;
Scottish Sunday Express – 26.1 per cent down = 45,272 to 33,475;
The Sunday Post – 18.9 per cent drop = 224,128 to 181,645;
Scottish Mail on Sunday – 11 per cent down = 100,502 to 89,413;
Independent on Sunday – 13.1 per cent down = 7,097 to 6,169;
The Observer – 11.6 per cent down = 17,483 to 15,460;
Scotland on Sunday – 17.3 per cent down = 46,778 to 38,705;
Sunday Telegraph – 8.5 cent down = 18,562 to 16,990; and
Sunday Times – 6.1 per cent down = 52,593 to 49,382.
