THE Sunday Herald newspaper has published the entire contents of a report detailing why the man convicted of the Lockerbie bombing might have escaped being convicted and jailed for the atrocity.
And in publishing – online – the 800-page document, the paper is inviting journalists to quote from it, saying it is possible to do so under the Data Protection Act.
Explaining its decision to publish the report, from the Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commission, the paper says: “We choose to publish it because we have the permission of [the man jailed for the bombing, Libyan] Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al Megrahi, and because we believe it is in the public interest to disseminate the whole document.”
Writes authors, Lucy Adams and John Ashton (the latter author of Megrahi’s official biography): “The controversial report from the Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commission has remained secret for five years because, until now, no-one had permission to publish it.”
