THE high-profile civil rights lawyer and campaigner, Aamer Anwar, has been unveiled as a new columnist on The Scottish Sun on Sunday.
Anwar succeeds his friend and colleague, Paul McBride QC, who penned two columns for the paper, from its launch, before his untimely death a fortnight ago while in Pakistan with Anwar.
Anwar represented the former MSP, Tommy Sheridan, during his trial for perjury 18 months ago, following a successful defamation case against the News of the World newspaper six years ago.
While Sheridan was to serve a year in prison, the News of the World was closed in July amid allegations of phone-hacking and succeeded by The Sun on Sunday.
Writes Matt Bendoris, chief features writer on The Scottish Sun: “It’s believed Sheridan is fuming his pal now works for ‘the enemy’. But Aamer said: ‘I can’t discuss that. That’s between me and Tommy. Some people will say I have sold my soul. I don’t think I have. I’m never going to shy away from what I think is right.'”
