A CITY centre shop in Aberdeen, run by newspaper publishers, DC Thomson, has been earmarked for closure, with ten posts at risk of redundancy.
The shop has been identified as being “no longer financially viable to sustain”. As well as selling DC Thomson’s Aberdeen-based titles, The Press and Journal and the Evening Express, the shop sells reader offers and subscriptions, plus tourism-related and other merchandise.
Says a company statement: “DC Thomson has confirmed its intention to close its retail shop in Aberdeen next month.
“The closure of the retail shop on Union Street – which was no longer financially viable to sustain – will place around ten positions at risk.”
The statement quotes a company spokesperson as saying: “Internal consultations are being held with the staff members affected. We will seek to minimise redundancy by managing vacancies, staff turnover, and through redeployment wherever possible.
“We intend to work with our staff to ensure the best possible outcome for each individual during this difficult period.
“Our newspapers are in a stronger position than they have been for some time – The Press and Journal is the best-selling Scottish quality daily newspaper and we’re in great shape as a media owner.
“In the current economic climate, our Aberdeen shop was becoming increasingly less viable so we’re concentrating on what we do best.”
