THE Fife local newspaper, the Fife Free Press, is helping to raise money to establish a Hall of Fame at Kirkcaldy football club, Raith Rovers, with its first inductee to be the late Jim Baxter, one of the greatest players ever to represent Scotland.
Baxter – who was to make his name mainly with Rangers and is famous for, among other things, playing ‘keepy-uppy’ during an international match against then world champions, England – began his career with the Starks Park club.
His legendary career is to be celebrated at a gala show at the town’s Adam Smith Theatre, in May, with all proceeds going to the club. Among those recruited by the Fife Free Press to assist is former Prime Minister and local MP, Gordon Brown.
Says the newspaper’s editor, Allan Crow: ”We pitched [the show idea] to Gordon Brown, he gave us his immediate backing – and the board of directors also gave it their unanimous endorsement. Since then we’ve been busy scoping out venues and formats, and have settled on a live show featuring some weel-kent faces from the world of football.
”The aim is to make it accessible to all fans, and we’re looking forward to a great night when we can honour a true legend.”
