THE broadsheet size of The Herald was today used to dramatic effect to illustrate work by a freelance photographer and the stress of serving as a soldier on the frontline in Afghanistan.
Page three comprises largely of a gallery of close-up portraits by London freelance, Lalage Snow, who began photographing Scots soldiers just before they left their Edinburgh barracks for Afghanistan.
Writes Brian Donnelly: “Ms Snow, who was embedded with the Army in Afghanistan, took three images of a number of soldiers over eight months last year.
“They were photographed before they left their Edinburgh base at Dreghorn Barracks, after they began operations and shortly after their safe return from the conflict where 394 British soldiers have died since it began in 2011.”
