The Big Issue in Scotland magazine has been recognised for its visuals in an global competition among 'street papers'.
At the annual conference, taking place in Glasgow, of the International Network of Street Papers, the Big Issue Scotland and Wales was declared a joint-winner in the the 'Best Design: Affecting Change Through Visual Content' category, with Norwegian street paper, Megafon.
This was the 16th annual conference of the INSP.
The winner in the category, 'Best Feature Story: Writing for Social Impact', was US street paper, Denver VOICE’s piece, The Resolute Shepherd.
The award for Best Cover was won by Austrian street paper, Kupfermuckn, for its cover, ‘Social benefits body scanner’.
The Best Interview section was won by American paper, One Step Away, for its interview, ‘ Fighting back’.
The Best Vendor Essay title was won by OCAS magazine in Brazil, for ‘Before the cold hurts …’.
The Best Photograph category was won by German street paper Asphalt, for its picture, ‘Trapped Nations’.
Nominated, The Herald newspaper just missed out in the INSP Special Award for External Press, 'recognising mainstream publications advocating for the needs and rights of homeless people'. The prize was won by O Trecheiro newspaper from São Paulo, Brazil, for its story, ‘Hiding from death’.
The discretionary award, presented bi-annually to an INSP member for an 'Outstanding Contribution to the International Street Paper Movement', went to Canadian street paper, L’Itineraire.
The INSP supports 112 street papers – such as The Big Issue – in 40 countries.
Among the judges was Tom Thomson, group managing editor, The Herald & Times Group.
