The Scotsman canteen is soon to be no more.
In a memo sent to staff, it was yesterday announced that, replacing the canteen, will be more hot water facilities, a fridge and two more microwaves.
It's understood last orders will be taken on the eighth of next month.
Last week, another memo, from managing director, Andrew Richardson, said of the planned closure: “This has been a difficult decision to take as I know that the canteen is used and enjoyed by many of us. However in recent months the number of people using the canteen has reduced, which, in turn, has greatly increased the subsidy required from the company to keep it open. Given the difficult economic environment, the increase in subsidy required was not affordable.”
Late last year, a new Tesco Express store opened across from The Scotsman's Holyrood Road HQ in Edinburgh – to 'fill a gap', as it were, because the canteen was being closed from 2.30pm onwards on weekdays and an even more reduced service at weekends.
