A magazine from Dollar Academy, in Clackmannanshire, has been named Scottish School Magazine of the Year.
The Galley beat off the challenge of Trinity Times – from Trinity High School, Renfrewshire – to take the most prestigious prize at this year's Scottish School Magazine Awards. Taking bronze, meanwhile, was Rare Beast, from Coatbridge High School, North Lanarkshire.
Elsewhere, the team from Kilgraston School, Bridge of Earn, saw their magazine, The Habit – Good Food Issue, take the Chairman’s Award, presented by chairman of judges, Fraser Allen, managing director of publishing agency, White Light Media.
In a statement issued by the organisers, guest of honour, Sandra Ewen, from the Scottish Government’s Learning Directorate, is quoted, as saying: “The high standard of entries highlights the commitment of both pupils and teachers to the Scottish School Magazine Competition. Being involved in a school magazine contributes to the development of important skills which are all relevant to life beyond school. These young people have all had the opportunity to take part in a project which brought real context to their learning and allowed them to develop skills for learning, life and work. This is an example of Curriculum for Excellence in action, bringing life to learning and learning to life.”
John Beattie, BBC Radio Scotland broadcaster, hosted the event which was attended by representatives from 23 schools from across Scotland, more than 200 pupils, teachers, Scottish Government officials and magazine industry guests.
Run by the Professional Publishers Association, this is the fifth incarnation of the event.
