A free music promotion by the Sunday Herald at the weekend – that used barcode technology instead of the traditional CD cover mount – was taken up, say the paper's publishers, by more than 7000 people.
Described by the Sunday Herald as a 'pioneering' development, partly to save on the environmental impact of making the CDs, the barcode-based free music was being offered in association with Scots independent record company, Chemikal Underground, to give readers up to 15 free tracks of 'alternative music' from bands based from Scotland to the US and Ireland.
In a statement issued by the paper's publishers, the Herald & Times, Grant Gibson, digital innovation manager, is quoted, as saying: “Feedback from our readers has been fantastic, with the vast majority telling us they prefer the convenience of digital downloads to CDs. We’d like to thank Chemikal Underground for sharing our enthusiasm for this trial and would encourage other music, video or ebook publishers who’d like to take part in similar promotions to get in touch.”
