A FORMER editor of The Herald has been appointed an Honorary Professor of Journalism and Media Studies at Glasgow Caledonian University.
Charles McGhee will be attached to the university’s business school and joins after having also been an editor of Glasgow evening newspaper, the Evening Times. A former president of the UK Society of Editors, he stepped down as Herald editor three years ago, after ten years with the Herald & Times Group.
Among things since then, he has set up his own media consultancy, working in both China and Nigeria.
Says a statement issued by the university: “Mr McGhee will share with the university’s students his knowledge of the industry gained over the past 35 years and develop innovative Continuing Professional Development programmes as well as help shape the university’s undergraduate and graduate courses.”
The statement also quotes university principal, Professor Pamela Gillies, saying: “Glasgow Caledonian University is a leading force in the field of Scottish education and research in journalism. We are delighted to welcome Charles McGhee as an honorary professor of our academic community. Charles’ intellectual acuity, experience and insight will guide the university’s future development in this important area. He will also be an inspirational role model for our students.”
McGhee recently served on an expert panel convened by the Scottish Government which examined the options for establishing a dedicated television service for Scotland – the Scottish Digital Network.
