The Sunday Herald is claiming today that the Prime Minister’s chief spin doctor, Andy Coulson, has spoken to lawyers for Scots socialist politician, Tommy Sheridan, who faces a trial a week tomorrow, charged with perjury.
In a story labelled 'exclusive', by Paul Hutcheon, it is claimed that the Downing Street director of communications has given a precognition statement following a request by Sheridan’s legal team. The paper adds that Coulson may be asked to appear as a witness at the trial.
Sheridan and his wife, Gail, were both charged with perjury in connection with evidence they gave in a defamation case against the News of the World, which Coulson used to edit.
Four years ago, Sheridan was awarded damages of £200,000 from the News of the World following claims by the paper that he had cheated on his wife.
