A SUNDAY Herald reader may have earned himself a rebuke from the paper’s sports editor yesterday, but allmediascotland suspects it was a price worth paying…..
In a letter in yesterday’s Sunday Herald sports pages, reader, Jon Jewitt, wrote: “The Scotland rugby team create history by being the first touring side to beat Argentina at Tucuman, in one of their greatest performances in recent times, and the Sunday Herald chose to use three-quarters of the front page to a goalkeeping error from some football team down south.”
Referring to England goalkeeper, Robert Green’s blunder to gift USA an equaliser, in a 1-1 draw, Jewitt continued: “Showing this irrelevant photo instead of Al Kellock lifting a trophy demonstrates more about what the Scottish press thinks its readers want, than what we actually do want. Please give a Scottish victory the true recognition it deserves.”
But the sports editor responded: “It was the magnitude of the goalkeeper’s error that made it worthy of the front page. We stand by the decision.”
However, the letter yesterday did secure Jewitt a bottle of Old Pulteney single malt for being chosen Letter of the Week.
Plus, the front page of yesterday’s Sunday Herald’s sports supplement was a superb action photo (by Natacha Pisarenko of PA) from the second of Scotland’s matches against Argentina, played on Saturday evening – this one ending in a 13-9 win, to make it a historic 2-0 series victory for the Scots.
