ST Bride’s Church, Cambuslang, was filled to capacity and beyond this morning – with many people standing – as family, friends and colleagues gathered to say their farewells to legendary Scottish trade unionist and journalist, Harry Conroy.
There was also a large attendance at Rutherglen Cemetery where Harry was laid to rest.
Requiem Mass was celebrated by Father Paul Morton who paid tribute to Harry’s outstanding contribution to his trade union and to the newspaper industry. Among other things, he was both general secretary and president of the National Union of Journalists and also an established writer on the Daily Record.
Father Morton also spoke about Harry’s work with Canon Kenyon Wright to establish a Scottish Parliament.
Friends of Harry spoke of a man who had been unafraid to stand up to the likes of the late newspaper magnate, Robert Maxwell, and who worked tirelessly over the years to lobby for better pay and conditions for his members.
Fittingly, the NUJ was represented by current general secretary, Jeremy Dear, with many other trade unions also represented. They were joined by various MPs and MSPs, past and present.
