STAFF at a printing plant run by the publishers of The Sunday Post newspaper face the possibility of redundancy, because of a dropping off of contract work from other publishers.
Some 45 people on the day shift at the DC Thomson plant are at risk of redundancy and are now engaged in a period of consultation about their futures. A night time operation will still continue and no editorial staff are affected.
No DC Thomson titles are published at the plant.
Says a company statement: “DC Thomson and Co. Ltd. has today announced that it will enter into a period of statutory consultation with the operational staff in the Glasgow Print Production Operation at Port Dundas Road.
“The company is proposing to change its printing operation from two shifts to a single shift with a possible reduction in headcount of around 45. Every effort will be made to redeploy staff into other roles and to minimise job losses. Those affected will be offered support including outplacement and retraining opportunities wherever possible. Volunteers will be sought in the first instance however, compulsory redundancies cannot be ruled out.”
A spokesperson for the company said: “The Glasgow Print Production Operation had been running at less thatn optimum volumes for some time and the company must reduce its costs if it is to be successful in the current economic climate.”
