THE Daily Star of Scotland and the Scottish News of the World have again bucked the trend of declining sales in Scotland among daily and Sunday newspapers, by registering increases on their circulations on this time last year.
Comparing the circulation figures in Scotland last month to those of twelve months previously, the falls – except for the Daily Star of Scotland and the Scottish News of the World – ranged between 3.5 and 26.9 per cent.
The figures read, across the board, as follows:
Scottish Daily Mirror (25,459 in January 2010 versus 29,185 in January 2009, down 3,726 or12.8 per cent), Daily Record (309,846 versus 336,244, down 26,398 or 7.8 per cent), Daily Star of Scotland (79,697 versus 85,227, down 5,530 or 6.5 per cent), Scottish Sun (351,869 versus 377,964, down 26,095 or 6.9 per cent), and Scottish Daily Express (67,199 versus 72,518, down 5,319 or 7.3 per cent).
Scottish Daily Mail (115,592 versus 119,723, down 4,131 or 3.5 per cent), Daily Telegraph (21,297 versus 22,949, down 1,652 or 7.1 per cent), Financial Times (4,133 versus 5,067, down 934 or 18.3 per cent), The Herald (55,778 versus 60,755, down 4,977 or 8.2 per cent), The Guardian (14,422 versus 16,455, down 2,033 or 12.4 per cent), and The Independent (7409 versus 9,766, down 2,357 or 24 per cent).
The Scotsman (45,687 versus 49,478, down 3,791 or 7.7 per cent), The Times (24,051 versus 28,127, down 4,076 or 14.5 per cent), Daily Star of Scotland – Sunday (28,437 versus 28,424, up 13 or 0.05 per cent), Scottish News of the World (280,252 versus 269,709, up 10,543 or 3.9 per cent), and Sunday Mail (378,321 versus 416,169, down 37,848 or 9.1 per cent).
Scottish Sunday Mirror (21,788 versus 26,733, down 4945 or 18.5 per cent), The People (13,765 versus 18,840, down 5,079 or 26.0 per cent), Scottish Sunday Express (37,061 versus 41,672, down 4,611 or 11.1 per cent), Sunday Post (234,522 versus 251,345, down 16,823 or 6.7 per cent), and Scottish Mail on Sunday (102,690 versus 107,229, down 4,539 or 4.23 per cent).
Independent on Sunday (5,926 versus 7,800, down 1874 or 24 per cent), The Observer (19,087 versus 21,416, down 2,329 or 10.9 per cent), Scotland on Sunday (52,551 versus 61,311, down 3,760 or 6.1 per cent) and Sunday Herald (42,500 versus 45,229, down 2,729 or six per cent).
