AN appeal by two Fife newspapers to its readers, to send Christmas treats to soldiers serving in Afghanistan, is about to hit the ‘silver screen’ as a film documentary.
The 25-minute film is about the Soldiers Shoebox Appeal run by the East Fife Mail and the Glenrothes Gazette newspapers.
Readers were challenged to see which area could donate the most number of shoeboxes filled with Christmas treats for the soldiers, and the newspapers worked with local army cadets and the Scottish charity, Parcels4Troops.
The result was over 2,000 shoeboxes being received, with the efforts turned into a documentary by Glenrothes Gazette editor, Gail Milne.
It is now to be shown in community cinemas in Glenrothes and Levenmouth.
The film includes an introduction from Jerzy Morkis, editor of the East Fife Mail, whose idea the appeal was, plus MSPs, Tricia Marwick and Claire Baker.
Soldiers from 3Rifles and army wives also feature in the production, plus children from Warout Primary School in Glenrothes, and reporters, Fiona Purnell and Paul Cardwell.
There are appearances too from Andrew Whiting and Ali Sutherland of Parcels4Troops.
DVDs of the documentary are making their way to 3Rifles, who barrack in Edinburgh and are in Afghanistan.
Two soldiers from 3Rifles were recently tragically killed in Afghanistan.
