THE long lunch has long since been a thing of the past for humble newspaper hacks, but at The Herald group of newspapers, it’s goodbye also to the decaf skinny latte, with almond croissant – at least for the next few weeks.
Says a memo issued to staff by the group managing editor, Tom Thomson, “claims for entertainment expenses in all areas of the business, including editorial, in the first quarter [of next year] will not be accepted”.
The memo also says that “travel and all other discretionary spend should also be kept to an absolute minimum consistent with maintaining competitive news coverage”.
