A FORMER reporter on the Scottish Catholic Observer who went on to become a deputy editor at The Herald newspaper and an executive editor at the Scottish Daily Mail, is to debate the role of the press in reporting Roman Catholicism.
Kevin McKenna – who left the Scottish Daily Mail last year and has since set up a media, communications and PR agency – will be arguing that the press has no obligation to report religion.
The debate, ‘Catholic and the press – are we being heard?’, is being held tomorrow, and is being sponsored by the Scottish Catholic Observer.
Said McKenna: “I’ve worked in the secular press for 24 years and it’s not the job of the press to share the Church’s values.” McKenna currently has a weekly column in The Observer (not SCO) newspaper.
Also taking part in the public meeting are Advocate, Brian Fitzpatrick; former Commissioner for Children and Young People, Kathleen Marshall; and Donna Nicholson, director for press and publicitiy at the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (Scotland).
It is being chaired by Gerard Carruthers, a Reader in Scottish Literature at the University of Glasgow.
