A FORMER senior manager at the owners of STV has been appointed chair of the independent body which runs a complaints and disciplinary scheme for taxation authorities.
Des Hudson was STV Group plc when it was known as Scottish Media Group, between 1998 and five years ago. He has been made chair of the Taxation Disciplinary Board, for a four-year term beginning on the first of next month.
He joined SMG as chief executive of its publishing division and was appointed a director of SMG plc the following year. At the time, SMG owned The Herald newspaper.
At The Herald, he was, among other things, charged with the task of eradicating what were perceived to be excessive expenses being incurred by senior management. He had joined having previously been managing director at the life assurance and pensions group, Britannia Life.
He left SMG for the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland, where he became chief executive, which he then left to become chief executive of the Law Society of England and Wales, where he still is.
