THE Scottish arm of a charity that cares for people working in newspaper retailing and distribution has raised over £3,000 at a special birthday dinner, held in Glasgow on Friday evening.
The Scottish committee of the NewstrAid Benevolent Fund – affectionately known as ‘Old Ben’ – was celebrating the 25th anniversary of its reconvening, ‘Old Ben’ itself having been founded in the early 19th century.
Over 110 guests attended the dinner and, says Ian Shaw – head of the Scottish committee – during the last seven years over £300,000 has been raised in Scotland alone for the charity, whose work includes running two sheltered homes, in Essex and Shropshire, for its older and more frail members.
