The editor of the general interest newspaper published by Dundee-based DC Thomson, The Weekly News, is to retire, after 39 years with the company.
Dave Burness is understood to have decided to take early retirement. With a career that includes sister title, the Sunday Post, he has been editor of The Weekly News for the last nine years.
In a memo issued by the company chair, Andrew Thomson, Burness and his team are credited with making changes to the paper – which carries health, lifestyle and celebrity features, among other editorial – that has led to it becoming profit-making after a spell making a loss.
Succeeding him is current Sunday Post editor, Donald Martin.
The Weekly News deputy editor, Rod Cameron, will continue to manage the day-to-day running of the title.
