A FORMER political editor of The Scotsman has been appointed editor of the conservative political magazine, The Spectator.
Fraser Nelson succeeds Matthew d’Ancona, who is stepping down after three-and-a-half years in the post.
Nelson has been the magazine’s political editor.
While at The Scotsman, which he left in February three years ago, he was previously a Westminster editor.
The Guardian newspaper quotes the magazine’s chair and editor-in-chief, Andrew Neil, saying of Nelson that he is the “most talented political editor of his generation” and a “natural to be editor of the Spectator”.
In the same article, Nelson is quoted, saying: “Against the cacophony of the 24-hour news era, there has never been a greater need for what the Spectator offers: wit, style, mischief, elegance of thought and independence of opinion.
“As editor, I will aim to protect and project its unique voice, combining the best literary and arts coverage in Britain with agenda-setting analysis.
“To edit the Spectator is, quite simply, the greatest honour in journalism and I hugely look forward to what lies ahead.”
