LATE last night, staff at the Evening Times newspaper were said to be hopeful of receiving a fair hearing from management after raising grievances against a demand by editor, Donald Martin, they undertake extra work.
It follows a mass meeting of the National Union of Journalists chapel at the paper earlier in the day which considered a request that staff absorb the sub-editing and design duties at sister title, West End Mail, which is under-staffed not least because of its editor being off, long-term, sick.
It was the threat of dismissal which appeared to have most angered union members who raised four motions at yesterday’s meeting, each of which was massively supported.
Last night, however, tempers appear to have calmed following indications from management the grievances would be dealt with “appropriately”.
