THE upcoming referendum on Scotland’s constitutional future was one of the most written-about topics of 2012, according to a survey of the UK’s main national newspapers and the BBC’s website.
Says the charity, the Media Standards Trust: “An independent Scotland (3,869 articles) became a possibility after an in/out referendum (2,868 articles) was announced.”
That said, Scots tennis star, Andy Murray, attracted some 4,321 articles all on his own.
Among other year-end statistics produced by the survey, the London 2012 Olympic Games attracted 38,674 articles and the Paralympic Games 4,743 articles. Some 7,694 articles were generated by the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
Meanwhile, the Leveson inquiry into Press standards prompted 5,452 articles.
The referendum is taking place in 2014.
And First Minister, Alex Salmond, was the 13th most written-about politician, down from ninth last year, with 3,563 articles.
