A GRADUATE in journalism has been named the first recipient of a prize set up in honour of a fellow, former student who died suddenly last year.
Family, friends and staff at Glasgow Caledonian University gathered to pay tribute to Darren Joliny at the first award ceremony of the annual prize established in his memory.
Catherine Ritchie (pictured, right), who graduated with a BA in Journalism earlier this year, was presented with the Darren Joliny Prize by Darren’s sister, Maria.
Darren graduated with a BA in Journalism in June last year. He collapsed during a game of football in January, a victim of Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome.
In a media statement issued by GCU, media and journalism subject leader, Julian Calvert, is quoted, as saying: “Darren’s death hit us very hard. This is the first time we have established an award of this nature and it means a lot to us. Catherine is a worthy winner, she has been an outstanding student.”
