TWO journalism lecturers have been recognised by the students they teach at a Glasgow college.
Cardonald College lecturers, Felicity Teasdale and Charles Fletcher – who both teach on the college’s HND Journalism course – were each winner’s at the college’s first student-led teaching and support awards.
There were two awards in each of four faculties: Access & Continuing Learning; Care, Science & Sport; Creative Industries and Technology & Business: one for student support and the other for excellence in teaching.
And making it ten awards in total, there were two further: for non-teaching support staff and innovation in practice, which judges lecturers’ ability to find new and interesting methods of teaching.
Felicity, who started as a local reporter with Glasgow South and Eastwood Extra and had a two-year stint at the Evening Times before taking up full-time teaching at the college six years ago, won awards for both excellence in teaching and student support within the Creative Industries faculty.
After the awards ceremony, she said: “I am completely and utterly overwhelmed. I never expected this in a million years.
“The awards are a fantastic recommendation that they are judged by the students based on comments received from other students.”
Fletcher, a former correspondent at BBC World Service and Sky News, teaches Radio Production which was added to the course during this, the 2011/12 session. He received the innovation in practice award.
The awards are understood to be the first of their type for colleges in Scotland and were set up by the college’s Students’ Association. They took place last night.
