A FINAL year student at Strathclyde University swept all before him at inaugural awards recognising the best of student journalism in Scotland.
Alan Robertson took a total of five titles at the Scottish Student Journalism Awards held earlier this evening, including in his capacity as managing editor of the student newspaper, The Glasgow Journal.
As well as Journalist of the Year, Robertson was named winner of the Scoop of the Year prize and the News Story of the Year one also.
The Glasgow Journal took the Student Publication of the Year and Multimedia Publication of the Year titles.
As well as completing his studies, he does subbing shifts at the Daily Record and Sunday Mail newspaper and two years ago spent a few weeks as an intern at allmediascotland.com.
Last year, he was named Journalist of the Year at the Scottish Student Journalism Awards run by The Herald newspaper.
Also among the major prize-winners was Glasgow Caledonian University, which took three of the first four prizes on offer.
Announcing Robertson as Student Journalist of the Year, Allan Rennie, editor-in-chief at Media Scotland – publishers of the Daily Record and Sunday Mail, plus numerous Scots local newspapers – praised Robertson’s ability to make a complex story accessible, to produce an effective opening paragraph.
The awards were organised by a group of HND Media students at Cardonald College, in Glasgow.
Attendees included Sunday Herald editor, Richard Walker; Caledonian Mercury editor, Stewart Kirkpatrick; and Mandy Rhodes, editor of Holyrood.
Also there were journalism lecturers Kathleen Morgan (Cardonald College) and Julian Calvert (Glasgow Caledonian University).
Welcoming everyone with an impressive opening speech was Charles Fletcher who, among other things, heads Scotland’s community radio network.
