It’s a quiet day for media news in Scotland today. The Scottish Daily Express (page 15) and The Herald (page 7) both report that Scottish broadcaster and journalist Lorraine Kelly, has been given this year’s Women of Influence Award. Other candidates included musician, Annie Lennox, and Olympic Gold medallist, Shirley Ann Robertson.
Glasgow-born Kelly has been involved in a great deal of charity work recently. She was one of nine celebrities who raised more than £1 million for Comic Relief by trekking through northern Kenya.
The award is run by the charity, Action for Children.
Accepting the award through video-link, Kelly is reported, saying: “I’m thrilled and honoured to be given such a prestigious award. I really admire the work being done by a charity that makes such a difference to children’s lives.”
In other news, discontent over News Corporation’s planned merger with BSkyB continues, with the Scottish Daily Express (page 18) reporting that a majority of Britons oppose the deal. They quote from a poll comissioned by YouGov which suggests that “60 per cent [of people polled] said Murdoch had too much influence on British politics, and 64 per cent said the merger will give News Corporation and Murdoch too much power over the media”.
Finally, also in the Scottish Daily Express (page 7), a story suggests that former newsreader, Natasha Kaplinsky, is said to have become embroiled in a property dispute in a Greek island resort. Her neighbours, David and Moira Baker, are quoted claiming she is breaking building regulations.
Mr Baker is quoted as saying: “We are by no means well off, but somehow we have to fight this – and through the courts if necessary.”
