The journalist behind the 'scoop' that led to the head of refereeing at the Scottish Football Association standing down, has written in The Guardian newspaper that a number of his sources were Scots journalists who viewed his blog – where his scoop appeared – “as a sort of samizdat outlet”.
Phil Mac Giolla Bhain writes of the downfall of Hugh Dallas, accused of having sent an email that joked about the Pope, causing a high-profile storm of protest, notably from the Scottish Catholic Media Office.
He said: “Some of my sources were Scottish journalists. Staffers on major titles viewed my website as a sort of samizdat outlet. Their sources inside the SFA were corroborating what my SFA source was saying.”
