THE future of the Scottish media is to be the subject of a special hustings, in the run-up to the General Election.
Being organised by the Glasgow branch of the National Union of Journalists, the debate is taking place a week tomorrow, and is to feature candidates from all the main political parties.
It is being held at Renfield St Stephen’s Church in Glasgow’s Bath Street, Glasgow – in the heart of the constituency that includes, the BBC and STV, The Herald & Times Group, the Daily Record, News International, DC Thompson and other media organisations.
Say the organisers: “This is an important opportunity for the NUJ to get its message across about the very real dangers our members face, in terms of jobs and conditions of service, and the threat posed to democracy with the erosion of journalistic scrutiny and standards as newsgathering and reporting become increasingly monopolised.
“We have asked members of our sister unions to join us at this meeting to express their concerns and urge as many of our members as possible to attend so that our prospective MPs are left in no doubt about the strength of our feelings.”
