THE associate editor of The Scotsman is expected to be standing down soon, in order to fight for election to Westminster.
It is understood George Kerevan is currently negotiating a voluntary redundancy package, as publishers, Johnston Press, seek to reduce its workforce.
Recently, allmediascotland.com reported that Scottish political editor, Hamish Macdonell, is similarly bound for voluntary redundancy, as The Scotsman and sister title, Scotland on Sunday, merge its content and production systems into a ‘seven day operation’.
Kerevan is to fight the Edinburgh East seat on behalf of the SNP.
Last week, The Scotsman noted his intentions while mainly reporting that former Edinburgh City housing convener, Sheila Gilmore, is to be the Labour candidate. Sitting MP, Labour’s Gavin Strang, who has held the seat since 1970, is retiring at the next General Election.
The SNP won the equivalent seat at the Holyrood elections two years ago. Mr Kerevan was a Labour councillor in Edinburgh, representing Portobello, until 1996.
