THE editor of a Scottish current affairs website has spoken of his embarrassment by predicting, ten years ago, a bright future for Scottish newspapers at the establishment of the Scottish Parliament.
Kenneth Roy – who edits www.scottishreview.net – is extensively quoted in an article in The Guardian newspaper about the slump in newspaper sales in Scotland.
Writes Jackie Kemp: “Scots, once the biggest consumers of newsprint in the world, are losing the habit, with the slump hitting home-grown titles the hardest.
And she quotes ‘veteran journalist’, Roy: “I have been re-reading with some embarrassment what I was predicting at that time.
“I foresaw this great flowering of Scottish journalism which would accompany the devolution process.”
Since then, combined sales of all six national daily and Sunday Scottish titles stand at roughly half the total they were a decade ago.
