A TEST radio station – operating for a month on a wavelength vacated by the now defunct all-speech Edinburgh radio station, talk107 – has taken on a Strathclyde University student as part of its news team.
The Coast 107 begins broadcasting on a restricted licence on Saturday in the hope that it can permanently operate on the 107FM licence that became vacant with the demise of talk107 just before Christmas.
Aimed at people aged over 40, the music station operates by the strapline, ‘more tracks, less chat’.
And Strathclyde student, Scott Mullen is joining Christine Jardine and Charles Fletcher – who is also station head – on the news team.
He is a student on the university’s postgraduate Diploma in Journalism course, and is currently sitting his NCTJ industry exams.
Said the 22 year-old: “The chance to work on a new station is obviously exciting. I am really grateful that I have been given the opportunity, and hope that if the station does well and gets the licence, it may lead to big things for me.”
Scott has been nominated for ‘Sports writer of the year’ at the annual, Scottish student journalism Write Stuff Awards, which will be announcing its winners a week on Wednesday.
His credits already include the Sunday Mail, Motherwell Football Club, The Herald, Evening Times, The Scotsman, The Sun and The Daily Express.
Adds Fletcher: “Scott did some terrific writing on work experience at The Herald & Times in Glasgow.
“He was cheeky enough to ask outright for the chance to join The Coast 107, so I said yes.
“Principally, it is so he may remember me when I am in my dotage, due any time soon, and he’s running a newsroom.”
