THE editor-in-chief of the Herald group of newspapers has been appointed vice-president of the UK-wide Society of Editors, a post which is expected to see him formally made president later this year.
Donald Martin – who is currently chair of the Scottish Daily Newspaper Society – was chosen after an unanimous vote in favour.
The editor-in-chief of The Herald, Sunday Herald and Evening Times will become president in November, subject to approval by the Society of Editor’s annual general meeting.
He is a former editor of the Evening Times and the Evening Express in Aberdeen. Other journalism stints include deputy editor of the Cambridge Evening News, chief sub-editor and production editor of the Reading Evening Post and launch editor of the Edinburgh and Lothians Post.
Donald has also been editor of the North West Evening Mail, in Cumbria.
His predecessor at The Herald, Charles McGhee, is a former SoE president.
In a media release issued by the Society, Nigel Pickover – SoE president and editor of the Evening Star, Ipswich – is quoted, saying: “Donald has experience across a variety of publications which he has edited with great success and style.
“As a valuable member of the society’s board, he has been a fearless battler for media freedom and standards. The Society is ten years old and I am sure Donald will help take it forward to new heights.”
