AS reported as breaking news yesterday afternoon, 70 posts are scheduled to go at Trinity Mirror in Glasgow, following confirmation that the editorial operations of the Daily Record and Sunday Mail newspapers are to be integrated into a single, multi-media, operation.
Bruce Waddell, currently in charge of the Record, is to become editor-in-chief of both titles, as well as the publisher’s revamped online offering, while current Sunday Mail editor, Allan Rennie, moves to a new role as editorial development director of Trinity Mirror’s national titles – the Daily Mirror, Sunday Mirror, People, Daily Record and Sunday Mail.
The radical changes – which will also take in the weekly Business7 and freesheet, The Glaswegian – will see a new content management system put in place as well as a reorganisation of the existing editorial structure across the daily and Sunday papers.
Most journalists will be required to work across both main titles in the future.
In a statement, Trinity Mirror said: “The current, five step editorial process – from reporter to newsdesk to designer to sub to revise – has remained largely unchanged for decades.
“This will be replaced with a new, three-step process – content creation, multimedia desk, page finishing – driven by simplified workflows and supported by cutting-edge technology.”
Said Waddell: “The Daily Record and Sunday Mail are Scotland’s best-read and most iconic titles. They will remain so. They both have fantastic news, sport and features content. Nothing will change in that respect.
“As part of this, we will integrate our growing digital operation into the overall editorial structure.“
