ONE of the country’s most successful radio stations – in terms of listener figures within its transmission area – yesterday celebrated its 18th birthday, in the process notching up over 100,000 broadcasting hours.
At 6am on January 22 1990, Danny Gallagher welcomed the people of the Borders and North Northumberland to their new radio station, which a year later was recognised as Local Station of the Year at the Sony Radio Awards.
Gallagher is now managing director at Moray Firth Radio.
With a 31.5 per cent share of its available audience – according to the latest RAJAR radio ratings – no other commercial station beats it for market penetration.
Among its most-established presenters is Hugh Brown, perhaps best known for ‘Golden Brown’ which began in 1992 and can be heard every Sunday from 10am – 1pm. Brown – who presented the weather for three years on stv – also spent 11 years presenting ‘Saturday Sports Live’ with live rugby coverage from across the Borders and beyond.
