McClatchie announces he is to retire from News International

AS issued as an e-alert to subscribers of the allmediascotland.com eNewsletter, the managing director of News International for Scotland and Ireland has announced he is to retire.

Colin McClatchie is expected to leave the publishers of, among others, The Scottish Sun, on Monday.

In a statement issued by News International: “Colin has been with us for almost twelve years and has been instrumental in consolidating our market position in Scotland and latterly in Ireland. His energy, drive and enthusiasm mean that he leaves us with strong and successful management teams in both countries. He moves on with our best wishes for the future”.

In the same statement, McClatchie – who is also a non-executive director of Scottish Enterprise,
Scotland’s economic development agency, and vice-chair of Scottish Opera – said: “I have been privileged to work, since 1995, in the UK’s leading media company, and during that time the company has achieved many significant milestones. A matter of particular personal satisfaction is the ascent of The Scottish Sun to market leadership.

“With the exciting, imminent developments for NI [including the Sun going all-colour], now seems the most appropriate time for my departure. I want now to progress the next stage of my career which will involve my
working mainly in non-executive roles.”

He quit as of 4pm yesterday afternoon and allmediascotland.com was the first to speak to him
after the announcement.

He said he was leaving on very good terms with the media conglomerate, who had “been fantastic”. But he wanted to “retire from corporate life”.

He added: “There’s never a good time to do this kind of thing, but I’ve been thinking about it for some time.”
