THE resignation of David Laws as Chief Secretary to the Treasury has thrust his replacement, former Scottish Secretary Danny Alexander, into the political spotlight… and could be seen as a feather in the cap for the Scottish communications industry.
Alexander, who became the MP for Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey five years ago, began his working career as a press officer for the Scottish Liberal Democrats before becoming director of communications for the European Movement from 1996 to 1999, then head of communications for the Britain in Europe campaign, and briefly, head of communications for the Cairngorms National Park before his election as an MP.
The appointment of the Scot to his second Cabinet post in less than a month marks the next step in his rapid political rise.
His profile rose during the election campaign as Liberal Democrat leader, Nick Clegg’s chief of staff.
