A film described as “a moving portrait of a man looking after his father in the Scottish Highlands” was among the winners last night at an awards competition celebrating the best of Scotland's new filmmaking and screenwriting talent.
Caring for Calum was directed by Lou McLoughlan, from the Screen Academy Scotland, based in Edinburgh and run by Edinburgh Napier University and Edinburgh College of Art. And she was among the winners at the BAFTA in Scotland New Talent Awards 2011.
Hosted by broadcaster, Kaye Adams, the awards – say the organisers – “recognise the very best new talent in the moving image industries in Scotland”. They were held at the Glasgow Film Theatre.
In a statement issued by BAFTA in Scotland, its chair, Ewan Angus, is quoted, as saying: “In today’s current economic climate, it is especially important that we take the time to recognise the outstanding level of talent emerging from the Scottish moving image industries. Tonight demonstrates the enormous wealth of potential we have within Scotland, and we’re proud to be able to give the winners the recognition they rightly deserve.”
Best Animation was awarded to Out on the Tiles, a stop-motion animation written and directed by Edinburgh College of Art student, Anna Pearson. Out on the Tiles follows the story of an inebriated woman who pays a visit to the ladies toilet in order to have a cheeky cigarette.
The evening also saw Hanna Stanbridge scoop the Best Actor/Actress award for her role as a street-smart teenager in a film about a housing estate terrorised by a murderous beast. Outcast, which was shot in Edinburgh, also starred well-known Scots actors, Kate Dickie and James Cosmo.
The statement also quotes BAFTA in Scotland director, Jude MacLaverty, saying: “Each year we are overwhelmed by the level of creativity, originality and thought contained within the nominated projects. The awards given out tonight were very well deserved and BAFTA in Scotland is proud to showcase the emerging talent within our country.”
