SECONDARY schools from across Tayside are being invited to cook up the recipe for sweet business success during an innovative challenge.

Elevator, which works across Grampian and Tayside to help facilitate the start up and growth of new and existing businesses, is running The Mackays Tayside Jamathon alongside Arbroath-based jam producers, Mackays, to introduce entrepreneurship amongst to youngsters in Tayside.

Founded in 1938, Mackays, is a long established and well-loved local business, exporting its products to over 60 countries around the world, and employs 165 people living in the local area.

The initiative will run for 26 days starting from the second week in May, during which secondary two, three and four students will be required develop a new and ready for market Mackays product by coming up with sweet new ideas, and avoiding any sticky business situations.

To kick-start the programme and spark creative thinking amongst the students, Elevator will facilitate a master class in each competing school, and will also offer remote mentoring throughout the project.

Pupils will be tasked with selecting a board of staff, carrying out their own market research, managing their finances and finally branding and marketing their new product.

Each group will then be invited to pitch their business to a board of industry experts, with the two final teams going head to head selling their product to the public at a Tayside event. Money raised from the sales will go to a charity of the team’s own choice.

Lucia Giuntoli, Elevator projects and Business Gateway co-ordinator, said: “It has been fantastic to work with Mackays to develop the Jamathon. This project will give students the opportunity to learn and develop invaluable skills, including entrepreneurship and employability.”

Mackays managing director, Martin Grant, said: “Mackays is delighted to be supporting the Tayside Jamathon, and I am incredibly excited to see the innovative ideas from the students. I am a firm believer in enterprise education at school level, and hope the groups getting involved will be inspired by the project.”

Elevator and Mackays are sure that The Mackays’ Tayside Jamathon will be a recipe for sweet success for the teams involved. If you would like to find out more about the Mackays Tayside Jamathon, please contact Lucia Giuntoli – lucia@elevatoruk.com – or call 07787 402302.
