AN Aberdeen businessman has raised the bar on getting fit at 40 as he prepares to take part in one of the UK’s most grueling charity cycle rides.
Euan Grant, 38, sales manager for Greenwell Equipment, is currently juggling his hectic work schedule around training to prepare for the Etape Caledonia, a renowned 81-mile course from Pitlochry across the Highlands which takes place on 10 May.
Euan was a keen cyclist as a child, and decided to get back in the saddle after too many years of all work and no play.
Considered to be the UK’s leading ‘sportive’, or closed road long distance cycling event, Etape Caledonia will see over 5,000 cyclists setting off from Pitlochry.
To ensure the roads are reopened on time, cyclists agree to a minimum speed, giving at least six hours and 15 minutes to cross the finish line, and Euan hopes to complete his challenge in under four hours.
To ensure he is ready for the challenge, Euan tries to cover 100-200 miles per week during his spare time.
He said: “In my teens and early 20s I was really fit, but as life got busier, my cycling dropped off. However, with a big birthday coming up, I decided it was time to give some attention to my health and fitness.
“I took part in the Etape Caledonia last year as a practice run, and it was tough. However this year, I am fitter, and I am looking forward to getting a good time.”
Race participants are asked to raise £350 for sponsor Marie Curie Cancer Care, and in 2014, more than £350,000 was raised to provide care for more than 40,000 terminally ill people and their families across the UK.
Marie Curie Cancer Care is the official Charity Partner of the Etape Series and all money raised by cyclists will enable Marie Curie nurses to provide free end of life care and support to terminally ill people and their families in their own homes or in dedicated Marie Curie hospices.
