Media Release: Work begins on Millburn Road, Inverness, to install bus gate

PublicRelationsToUse

ROAD users in Inverness are advised that construction work will begin on Tuesday (5th May) following the May Day holiday, on improved public transport access to Raigmore Estate.

Contractors Pat Munro (Alness) Ltd, on behalf of Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), will begin work on Millburn Road to construct a bus gate as part of wider access improvements to link Inverness Campus with the city centre.

The works are expected to last up to eight weeks and require the closure of one lane of each carriageway on Millburn Road near KFC.

Temporary traffic lights will be installed close to the current pedestrian crossing point. Restrictions will also be in place on the other three approaches to the Millburn roundabout.

Work had been due to start on the Millburn Road bus gate route two weeks ago (20 April).

Due to the recent major fire on Academy Street, the developers and contractor jointly decided to delay the project to minimise disruption to traffic.

At present, eastbound buses and other traffic wanting to access Raigmore Estate need to travel via the Raigmore Interchange.

The new junction will allow buses only to access King Duncan’s Road while avoiding the Raigmore Interchange completely. They can then continue through Raigmore Estate and drop passengers near the pedestrian bridge to Inverness Campus which was installed over the A9 in 2013.

The bus gate will include controlled traffic signals and a pedestrian crossing.

Planning permission in principle for the changes to the road layout was agreed by Highland Council’s south planning applications committee in 2014.
