THIS August, internationally-renowned – violinist, Leland Chen – will lead Russian Classics, a summer school for talented young musicians at RCS in Glasgow, featuring a host of expert teachers including conductor, Peter Manning, concert master of the Royal Opera House.
Begins a spokesperson: “Russian Classics will explore Russian classical repertoire, allowing the young musicians to experience for themselves what it is like to perform in world-class venues with some of the UK’s best teachers. Students will immerse themselves in solo, chamber and orchestral performance, guided throughout by expert teaching staff.”
Russian Classics is open to strings, wind and brass musicians aged 13-18 who are playing at a level equivalent to ABRSM grade seven and above.
On announcing the new summer programme, Mr Chen said: “I usually teach older students at undergraduate or postgraduate level so this is a nice change for me working with younger musicians.
“Working with young people presents an exciting challenge; they bring a freshness to the music and soak up everything you teach them – music needs that kind of freshness. It’s great to feel I can pass on my knowledge and experience to the next generation of musicians.”
And Peter Manning added: “I’ll be working with the students on Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto.
“This is one of the all-time great pieces of music; dramatic, soulful, exciting, sad, happy, conversational and reflective… it is truly a grand ‘sound opera’ and I am thrilled to join Leland Chen.
“He is a magnificent violinist and we are going to create and explore an orchestra/soloist mix as something really vivacious and ultimately satisfying as a living art-work – just as Tchaikovsky intended.”
Russian Classics is the second orchestral summer school hosted by the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Last summer, over 50 young people studied with Nicola Benedetti on her Concerto for the Commonwealth summer course.
Application are open to young musicians from all over the UK and beyond. To find out more, go to rcs.ac.uk/russianclassics
