A LEADING North-east organics recycling firm has won a multi-million pound contract with Moray Council.
Keenan Recycling, which is based in New Deer, Aberdeenshire, and transforms food and garden waste into BSI-accredited compost, has secured the five-year contract worth £2.7million to collect and recycle waste from households in the area.
The specialist recycling firm previously held a ten-year contract to process mixed organic waste on behalf of the council, and the company has the option to extend the latest contract for a further 12 months.
Says a spokesperson: “Since the introduction of the Waste (Scotland) Regulations, which came into force in January 2014, Keenan Recycling has seen its client list triple from 600 to 1800, and now collects more than 60,000 tonnes of waste.
“To meet demand from clients, the firm has invested millions of pounds in specialist equipment to strengthen its operations stretching from Stonehaven in the south to Tain in the North.
“Moray Council currently provides kerbside collections of mixed, green and food waste from 44,000 households in Moray, and Keenan Recycling’s latest contract will see the company treating around 12,000 tonnes of municipal food and green waste each year at its award-winning site.”
The specialist firm will also treat an additional separate green waste stream from the council’s household waste and recycling centres (HWRCs).
Managing director of Keenan Recycling, Grant Keenan, said: “We are delighted to have won the contract and look forward to continuing our work with Moray Council to help deliver a world class service. The contract is another step forward in reducing waste and promoting recycling in the area.
John Cowe, chair of Moray Council Economic Development and Infrastructure committee, said: “I welcome the news of the new contract and am pleased that whilst being tendered through Public Contract Scotland, a local firm has been successful.
“The diversion of green and food waste from landfill is something that is increasingly important and securing this contract will go a considerable way to reducing the costs of the service. With that in mind, I would urge everyone to review their recycling practices and divert as much waste as possible.”
